Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery, is a type of surgical procedure that involves making small incisions in the abdomen or other parts of the body and inserting a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light at the end, to visualize the internal organs. The surgeon can then use other small instruments inserted through other incisions to perform the necessary surgical maneuvers. Laparoscopic surgery offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including less pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and reduced scarring.
Many general surgical procedures can be performed using laparoscopic techniques, including appendectomy, cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), hernia repair, colectomy (removal of part of the colon), and gastrectomy (removal of part or all of the stomach). However, some complex procedures may still require open surgery, and the decision about the most appropriate surgical approach will depend on the individual patient’s condition and other factors.
